Johny Deep

The nominees and honorees for the 2012 CFDA Fashion Awards were announced March 14, with Johnny Depp to become the first male recipient of The Fashion Icon Award. Organized by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), the prestigious annual ceremony’s 2012 edition will be presented by Seth Meyers of Saturday Night Live and take place Monday, June 4 in New York.

Designer and CFDA President Diane von Furstenberg announced the nominees and honorees, with the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award to go to Tommy Hilfiger. Tokyo’s high-end shopping district of Ginza was back at its booming best this week with hundreds of shoppers queueing up to spend their cash, in an echo of Japan’s bubble years.
Around 450 people lined up on one block, eager to splurge more than 40,000 yen ($500) on the new iPad, the latest in a long line of must-have electronic gizmos that a certain sector of Japanese consumers crave.
But at about the same time, another 1,000 people were queuing just a few streets away to bag a clothing bargain as Uniqlo threw open the doors of the largest store in an ever-expanding global empire.
“I’ve been waiting since 5:30 this morning,” said 23-year-old Tsubasa Okamoto.
“I would like to see their new offerings in the designer’s collaboration line. But most of all, I like their products for the price.”
And with a pair of cotton trousers or a t-shirt for as little as 990 yen ($12), the attraction is obvious.
Prices like these are a reminder that while Ginza is buzzing again, not everyone has come for the designer brands and exclusive lines that made the area one of the priciest in the world to do business.

The largest Uniqlo store in the world opened in Tokyo’s upmarket Ginza district on Friday morning, raising the stakes in the growing global market for clothing ranges that are fashionable yet reasonable.

The new outlet has 12 floors and a total retail space of nearly 5,000 square meters, making it the largest of the brand’s global flagship stores. Owned by Fast Retailing Co., Uniqlo already has flagship outlets in New York, London, Paris, Shanghai, Seoul, Taipei and Osaka.

The opening of the smart glass-and-chrome store mirrors Yanai’s vision for the company. In September, the firm announced that it is going to ramp up production to 5 billion items a year, open as many as 300 new stores globally every year and record net sales of Y5 trillion ($65 billion) a year by 2020. After stars including Jessica Chastain and Michelle Williams topped best dressed lists during awards ceremony season, the women behind their looks rate highly in an annual ranking by US publication The Hollywood Reporter (THR) of the industry’s 25 most powerful stylists — which this year excludes fashion mogul Rachel Zoe.

After evaluating factors such as clients, visibility during awards season and breadth of influence, THR cites Kate Young, whose patrons include Natalie Portman, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams, as this year’s most powerful stylist.

The latter wore red Louis Vuitton to the Academy Awards last month and came second in a Twitter best dressed list, according to data based on tweets sent regarding the awards ceremony with the hashtag #BESTDRESSED. Jessica Chastain topped the poll with her black and gold Alexander McQueen dress, although her stylist Elizabeth Stewart, who also dresses Viola Davis, Freida Pinto and Jennifer Lawrence, came in fourth place in THR’s list.
